Bulla Ki Jaana - Rabbi Shergill (Lyrics)

Na maen momin vich maseet aan
Na maen vich kufar diyan reet aan
Na maen paakaan vich paleet aan
Na maen moosa na pharaun.

Bulleh! ki jaana maen kaun

Na maen andar ved kitaab aan,
Na vich bhangaan na sharaab aan
Na vich rindaan masat kharaab aan
Na vich jaagan na vich saun.

Bulleh! ki jaana maen kaun.

Na vich shaadi na ghamnaaki
Na maen vich paleeti paaki
Na maen aabi na maen khaki
Na maen aatish na maen paun

Bulleh!, ki jaana maen kaun

Na maen arabi na lahori
Na maen hindi shehar nagauri
Na hindu na turak peshawri
Na maen rehnda vich nadaun

Bulla, ki jaana maen kaun

Na maen bheth mazhab da paaya
Ne maen aadam havva jaaya
Na maen apna naam dharaaya
Na vich baitthan na vich bhaun

Bulleh , ki jaana maen kaun

Avval aakhir aap nu jaana
Na koi dooja hor pehchaana
Maethon hor na koi siyaana
Bulla! ooh khadda hai kaun

Bulla, ki jaana maen kaun
Not a believer inside the mosque, am I
Nor a pagan disciple of false rites
Not the pure amongst the impure
Neither Moses, nor the Pharoh

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

Not in the holy Vedas, am I
Nor in opium, neither in wine
Not in the drunkard`s craze
Niether awake, nor in a sleeping daze

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

In happiness nor in sorrow, am I
Neither clean, nor a filthy mire
Not from water, nor from earth
Neither fire, nor from air, is my birth

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

Not an Arab, nor Lahori
Neither Hindi, nor Nagauri
Hindu, Turk (Muslim), nor Peshawari
Nor do I live in Nadaun

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

Secrets of religion, I have not known
From Adam and Eve, I am not born
I am not the name I assume
Not in stillness, nor on the move

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

I am the first, I am the last
None other, have I ever known
I am the wisest of them all
Bulleh! do I stand alone?

Bulleh! to me, I am not known

"Bulla ki jaana" - orginally sung by Baba Bulleh Shah, new rendition by Rabbi Shergill

ultimate song!! thanx a heeap for the lyrics!
the redundacy of inter alia the language barrier becomes evident in the very fact that we fell in luv with the song even though we cudn't really make out word to word meaning of the song!
The essence came out just the same.
Ladies and gentleman,
Here is Our Redeemer..our saviour..who shall lead us to the Kingdom of heavenly music...
*Amen!*

Thanks a lot for the lyrics, KD. Just one comment: you translated:
Na maen paakaan vich paleet aan
to be:
Nor the pure amongst the impure

I think it should be:
Nor the impure amongst the pure

That's because "paakaan" = the (many) pure; and "paleet" = the (single) impure

Just wondering, I see a lot of people just begging for lyrics/translations and I find it quiet perplexing. Because its all there in the CD. Yes! The lyrics & translations are inside the CD along with the credits & artwork! If you like something so much can't you just buy it? Its not inordinately expensive either. Poor availability, kanjoosi, laziness, what?

Anonymous said...

Instead of wasting time writing messages like the one below.... copy all the lyrics from the inside of the CD for us.... oh and while you're at it, post the art work on here for us too. I find it quite perplexing that you have been so selfish and havent already shared these things with us.

;-)

I think it's ok to post the lyrics as some CDs might not come with lyrics. A good idea would be for Admin or someone to translate it themselves and post it, so fans can buy the album if they want the official translation/lyrics, but most casual listeners wll appreciate the unoffical (but still accurate) translation/lyrics. Either way I don't mind.

I did buy the original CD, and the advantage was that I got a creatively packaged box(not your standard plastic CD case), and I could burn the songs in higher quality on my PC (256kbs) using my preferred MP3 encoder (lame), and read all the lyrics for every song in a beautifully designed booklet. Buying the CD and seeing the artwork adds another element to the album. Tere Bin is my favourite song, and made me watch the Delhi Heights film (which I hadn't heard before).

Well, let me make our position clear on this:
1. We DO NOT recommend pirating songs - there are several ways to get Rabbi's music both online and offline that are legal, well priced and convenient. The YouTube videos on the site are meant to be used as samplers for those who are new to Rabbi's music and would like to hear it before buying it.
2. The purpose of this blog is not to just be a store of lyrics for Rabbi Shergill songs. We do realize that the CD comes with the lyrics (I have a CD). The purpose is to discuss the music and how different people relate to it. Here is the blog post that defines our purpose with this blog: http://rabbism.blogspot.com/2006/01/welcome-to-rabbism.html.

Having lyrics online is useful for several people, and there are those who actually enjoy doing the translations and discussing the meanings. So don't just take the posts at their face value - have a look at the conversations that happen under them.

this song is superb... (Rabbi) Gill and his guitar rocked big time ...

I know one more song by Junoon - "Bulleya" which was released in 1999... that song too is based on Baba Bulleh Shah's poetry ... Where he is putting in the same question, "who am I?" that too a Great song ...

(Disclaimer: This post is in no way an attempt to compare these two great songs (I wud be a fool if I try to do that.). I just put in this comment to let people know, if they are not already aware, of the other masterpiece. Because I believe whoever liked the song and it's philosophy, would appreciate that song too, just as I do.)

First of all thanks a million for the lyrics with translation. The first time I watch the video I was stunned with the voice and the melody. I could make some meaning out of video as it shows some english translations. But with this complete translation I am just speechless. It a beaatiful lyrics with very deep meaning and great voice to go with it. Thanks again.

The Only Panjabi song I like most, beautiful lyrics and beautiful voice. Thanks a lot of the lyrics and for the translation.

Basic purpose of a human is to understand his Creator (Allah, God, etc...) as Bullay Shah asking itself, who I am? The purpose of any is not only to do their own works in whole life but the most important is to determine who made him, and for which purpose?

If you think i m right then think deeply inside these words what message the bulla wanna give us.

The whole song reminds me of a quote:

"the longest journey of any person is the journey inward" - Dag Hammarskjöld (he's a christian mystic & statesman)

And this makes me to think tht all religions teach same principles..

How true, how beautiful, bulla ke jaana mein kaun....

As I look at today's worls divided by differences, this song goes straight to my heart.

Unknown said...

Another thing that comes to mind is the unfamiliar pronounciations of the singer. I can understand Punjabi, some Urdu... this sounds like almost Arabic, yet as I read the words and recognize them in the song, I understand them.

Hmmm...

Same words like us, different sounding pronounciations, foreign or own? Heart says own.

Love,

Vidyut

I think there is some slight error in the translation of the lyrics here. I agree more with the version here:

Bulla ki jaana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jaana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jaana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jaana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?

Na mei moman vich masetan Neither I am a believer (who stays) in a mosque
Na main vich kufar dian reetan Nor do I indulge in actions of disbelief
Na main pakan vich paleetan Nor am I the pure one amongst the impure

Na main andar bed kitaban Neither I exist in books of Vedh
Na main rehnda phaang sharaban Nor do I stay drunk
Na main rehnda mast kharaban Nor do I remain stoned, rotting

Na main shadi na ghamnaki Neither I am happy nor sad
Na mei vich paletan pakeen Nor am I in the (argument of) Purity and Impurity
Na main aaabi na main khaki Neither I am (made) of water nor of earth

Na main aatish na main paun Nor am I fire nor air
Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?

Na main arabi na lahori Neither I am Arabic nor Lahori
Na main hindi shehar Nagaori Nor am I (resident of) the Indian City Nagaori
Na hindu na turk pashauri Nor Hindu nor Turk Peshaweri

Na main bhet mazhab de paya Neither I found the secret of religion
Na main aadam hawwa jaya Nor did understand Adam and Eve
Na koi apna naam dharaya Nor did I create a name for myself

Avval aakhar aap nu jana From beginning to end, I tried to understand myself
Na koi dooja hor pacchana I did not come to know of anyone else
Mai ton na koi hor syana I am not just another wise one

Bulle shah kharha hai kaun Bulla Shah, who is this standing?
Bulla ki jaana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?

Bulla ki jaana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?

Na main moosa na pharon Neither I am Moses nor Pharoah
Na main jagan na vich saun Neither I am awake nor asleep
Na main aatish na main paun Neither I am fire nor Air
Na main rahnda vich Nadaun Nor do I live among fools
Na main baitthan na vich bhaun Neither I am sitting nor am I in a tornado

Bulle shah kharha hai kaun Bulla Shah, who is this standing?
Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?

Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?
Bulla ki jana main kaun Bulla, who knows who I am?

( Check the section avval.., I feel that is not correct in the translation on this blog). These lyrics are from http://www.mouthshut.com/review/Bulla_Ki_Jaana_Main_Kaun_-_Rabbi-71127-1.html.

Thanks so much.

All is ONE & one is ALL when the EGO is annihilated. EGO also called "edging out god" is the definition that one gives to oneself. Either by limiting oneself to be a human (father, mother, child only) or recognizing oneself as the eternal light (joy, peace, truth along with the worldly relationships). ONLY those who reached minimal EGO will pop-up the question "WHO AM I" coz they have no identity in their mind having comprehended the ever changing state of the body, mind and life (hence no eternal definition). The rest swirl in the whirlpool of the world and hence have no time to address existential queries. Depending on the EGO state one will gyrate towards either one of the ends. When one is in the here and now, only then will one comprehend the oneness of the universe and experience their oneness with the universe, and thus experience SYNCHRONICITY which leads to the state of "AHAM BRAHMASMI" or I am the universe (Godhood). Then they stop thinking for themselves and accept life as it is and lead their lives from moment to moment as the situation demands, without oscillating between the past and the future. Thus with no liabilities of TIME their space too reflects Brotherhood. In fact as the ancient Hindu’s and modern Quantum know the reality itself becomes fluid, morphing according to ones state of mind. This is the reason the EVOLVED ONES visit planet Earth time and again to expound the truth of oneness through the iconic god’s prevalent at that time. In truth there is no GOD, just one's oneness and the beliefs one holds, be it rational self-confidence or irrational GOD. This is the reason why no one can either prove or disprove the existence of GOD since primarily it is the mindset that resolves every day life and thus their opinion of GOD.

In the end the eternal paradox of the universe holds true- Only when I am nothing(no ego) do I exist as everything(one with the universal consciousness) as expounded in ZEN(un-defined Buddhism) or the Beatles’ number "Nowhere Man"). Coz when you are ONE where is the other to project one's ego. It’s like telling the mirror who I am.

Rabbi has done full justice to the song and may you inspire more people.

This song is based on ancient Advaita philosophy. I don't take it as a pop music. The lyrics of the songs means that I am nothing i.e. I don't belong to any caste, creed or religion. The same was also written in holy book of Vedanta which is most ancient and also said by Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa whose disciple was Swami Vivekananda. I have also written the same as a poem by Bulleh Shah in my blog.
