When I heard
Challa in the latest album by Rabbi Shergill -
Avengi Ja Nahin - I found the music familiar than usual. I remembered that there was an old song by Gurdas Maan on the same lines. A quick search gave me the desired results. Here are both versions for you. Similar music, different lyrics but same soul of Punjabi folk music.
Note: Any further insight on these songs and their relation will be much appreciated. Thanks.

'challa' is a traditional punjabi folk song. just like 'jugni' and 'heer' from the first album. you would find many many versions each of challa, jugni and heer .... rabbi, gurdas mann, sukhwinder singh, sandeep chowta, nitin sawhney... these are just a few of the people whose variation of heer i have heard...you'll find dozens more on youtube, i think...
also, check out the 'challa' in the album - lets enjoy - by midival punditz ... i find it to be the best of these 3.
cheers. good work with the blog.
Thanks for the information Mr. Tarvinder. We will definitely check out those versions. After all, folk is folk. :)

Check this by Shaukat Ali.
I gnore the video :)
its pakistani POV :)
Shaukat Ali, Alam Lohar have been amazing punjabi folk singers.
i wish Rabbi takes inspiration from their sings and takes a few beautiful folk lyrics

Rabbi's music is simply great. What I have found is that the music builds on you as you hear it number of times. I like all his songs of his latest album. Can you get the guitar chords of his song maen bolia? if possible.
The more your listen to his music, more your like it. Never had this experience before.
Challa is a traditional song sung by alam lohar of pakistan and by gurdas mann and many versions of it are available ... and when you would listen to each version of challa ... you would be amazed to see each version is great .... although gurdas mann and alam lohar would be ranked at top ... rabbi's version i didn't like when i listened to it for first time
(because i had heard gurdas mann's version before :) ).... but now for last one weak i am listening to it continuously :) .... Rabbi is great ... and also listen to bilqis and tu avin bandra ... both are good ..infact whole album is good except that english song ....
When I say that I did not like the English song in this album, I mean the way it was sung. otherwise, the song in itself is good.

As told by others also, challa is a folk song basically. Its origin is in Sandal Bar, Pakistan. Its assumed to be 200-300 years old. So gurdas maan just rendered it once more. Many singers have been singing it and with time some additions have been happening.
Rabbi extends it further with adding some beautiful stanzas as he did with jugni.
Great lyrics !
I always thought that a "Sardar" can always sing a catchy fast tune Punjabi song..but..all changed with the new Rabbi album..all i can say is wowwww...now here is a man that has given a new dimension to music...and my favorite is "Bilqis (jinhe Naaz hai Hind pe") and "ballo" ...i can listen to it thousand times..
[b] Instead of comparing, let us enjoy these eternal songs, I can find any other singer coming close to Rabbi when it comes to spreading suffi rock music.
Simply loved his current launch and desperately looking forward to the next one
As far as challa by Gurdass mann saab is concerned there are some changes in lyrics too........that challa too was a gem
My kind request to all of you to send me the lyrics of "Challa" of Rabbi Shergill with english translation as i don't know your language but the song touch my heart a lot. Any one please kindly send me a mail at quanfey@gmail.com

200-300 years ago there was no "Pakistan", it was all India, so it is an Indian-Punjabi_ song. "Pakistan" is just India with a superimposed Arab religion.
hey...all of his songs are gr8...and the history of challa is cool to..but i agree with anonymous that u cant call say it originated it from pakistan...it was all india before...overall it is a punjabi folk song that was sang by all religions...amazing song that will never grow old!!!
some of you said you didnt like the way rabbi sang the english tune...im from the UK and one word to that song ..WOW...he sounds like a gora singing a tune...he is one of the few Indian born ppl i have heard that can sing a english song and pull it off...no offence alot of them can not...just shows how versatile he is!!..
hey, does anyone have his e-mail id (or some other \contact)? of rabbi's?
Neeti, If u manage to get his ID please pass it on to me
hey KD, i tried and did not get it, so finally ended up writing a long comment (with as many chareecters as were allowed) in his website for 'avengi ja nahi'. they have a 'post a comment' :)
can someone please tell me who is the original author/poet who wrote the folk song 'challa'?
thanks in advance.
Quoting from my comment above:
"As told by others also, challa is a folk song basically. Its origin is in Sandal Bar, Pakistan. Its assumed to be 200-300 years old. So gurdas maan just rendered it once more. Many singers have been singing it and with time some additions have been happening.

so basically ur saying because its so old nobody knows who originally wrote the folk song? I find that a bit hard to believe.
Also, can someone translate the one sung by rabbi
Yea almost true. Folk songs pass from generation to generation. And i think in many cases nobody knows the name of the original writer. Not only in case of Challa, there might be many others too.
Hey does rabbi shergill have a site? is this it? if so does he frequent it?
hi i would love to have a eng translation of this song. if anyone have a link please send to: info@ranjit.de
very thanks
can anyone tell me where i can find a CD with the song Challa by Gurdas Mann on it? which album did it come from of Gurdas? thank you
@Magicsteven:
Originally Gurdas Maan sung it for Punjabi movie "Long da Lishkara". So either look for that CD or look for any of the "Best of Gurdas Maan" albums. Challa must be there !
Hey, has any here noticed that Vital Signs (Pakistani pop band from the late '80s-early '90s) also have a version of this song? It's quite different, and distanced from its folk roots (and thus not directly comparable to Rabbi's/other versions, IMO) but it's unmistakbly the same song!
And @the guy who said "200-300 years ago there was no "Pakistan", it was all India", no one's claiming its a 'Pakistani' song, I believe Sidhu just pointed out the fact that it originated 200-300 years ago in an area which is NOW in Pakistan. So just chill and get a life :P
Anyway, Rabbi is awesome and so is this song :) Peace
Hey, also I forgot to add, there's a blog with a version of this song with English subtitles...it's really useful for non-Punjabi speakers! Link below:

A little dope for Rabbi-ists out there -- he's been working on a new album for the past 16 months or so and it's almost done. The word is it's also been produced by him in addition to composition & writing credits. I hear its more rocking & funkier than ever. Keep the faith people! Glad tidings are afoot!
Hi Guys,
'Ballo' is gr8, but did u notice that the tune is similiar to the song 'Aisha Aisha' by Outlandish!!
The irony is that Rabbi Shergill had moved to the court on November 26, just two days before the scheduled release of 'Sorry Bhai' stating that the song 'ballo' had been reused without his permission!!!!
Any comments?
Guys,
Any update on his new album?
Waiting for a big surprise from Rabbi.
'Anonymous' hinted on a new project,
please reveal urself....
and tell us more about his new album or any movie for which he is composing music!!!!
Even if I did reveal myself, you still wouldn't know me. :) I came to know of his new album from a person who works at one of the studios Rabbi uses in Mumbai. He's produced/arranged this album himself (the last two were by KJ and Mauro Pagani resp.) and the flair, talent for production that he's revealed on this one, I'm told, surpasses even his talent at singing, guitar playing and lyric writing. "Astounding!" was the description. He said that it'll be a landmark album, that it isn't everyday that an album of this quality is made in India or anywhere. The guy told me that Rabbi was a man possessed on this one. He said no to shows, films and all the work he was offered simply to make this one album. I'm a nervous wreck with anticipation myself. I'll queue up for this if I have to. Hallelujah!
Hey Anonymous,
Wanted u 2 reveal urself so that we can address u properly, 'anonymous' is sounding little odd.. it's fine, if u don't want to do so....
now regarding the update that u hav given,.....
Thanks for the gr8 update. keep posting as and when you get any news.
Getting impatient each day!!
